Dry Tooling

Dry tooling is a unique sport. It is a form of “mixed” climbing using ice axes and on bare rock.

Here at Birdsboro we have over 30 routes that are for dry tooling. The areas are all designated with signs & many have a small metal plate with the letter “D” on it to denote the bottom of the route.

Bob Perna has been the driving force behind the development of these routes.

Warning: DO NOT USE AXES OR CRAMPONS ON REGULAR SPORT CLIMBING ROUTES. The tools can damage the rock, the dry tools routes are specifically designed for for this reason.
